Dear Parents, Students, Staff, and Families,
As we head into the weekend, our area is expected to experience winter weather that could impact travel and outdoor activities. I encourage everyone to take simple precautions, plan ahead, and use extra care—especially if you need to be on the roads or outdoors for extended periods of time.
The well-being of our students, staff, and families is always a top priority for Cabarrus County Schools, and we truly care about the safety and health of everyone in our school community.
Please continue to monitor district communications for any updates or important information as conditions develop. We will share any school-related information with you as soon as possible through our district channels.
Thank you for your continued partnership and for looking out for one another. Stay warm, stay safe, and take care of yourselves and those around you.
Stay well,
Dr. John Kopicki
Superintendent, Cabarrus County Schools

As winter weather moves into the area, here are a few important reminders to help families stay informed and safe:
-
ParentSquare is the first stop 📱ParentSquare is our primary way to share updates about delays, closures, and remote learning days with parents and students. If you do not currently have the ParentSquare app on your cell phone, it is the BEST way to receive district communications. You may download the ParentSquare app here on Google Play or the App Store.
-
Keep notifications on ⏰ Decisions are shared as early as possible, but changing conditions may require updates later.
-
Look for clear details 📝 Messages will explain whether the day is a delay, remote learning day, or closure—and what that means for students and staff.
-
Use multiple channels 📢 Weather updates are also shared on the CCS Website, ParentSquare, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, and local media channels.
-
Safety comes first ❤️ Decisions are made with student and staff safety as the top priority, using forecasts, road conditions, and guidance from local emergency management and public safety agencies.
-
Update your contact info 🔄 Make sure your phone number and email address in ParentSquare are current so you don’t miss alerts.
-
Trust official CCS messages ✅ Please rely on district communications rather than rumors or screenshots as conditions can change quickly.
-
Transportation matters 🚌 Cabarrus County is 364 square miles and road conditions can vary greatly across the county, especially for buses, which is why district decisions may not reflect the conditions on roadways in your own neighborhood or area.
Thank you for partnering with us to keep everyone informed this winter. Stay warm, stay safe, and take care!

Simple ways to prepare for a power outage and protect yourself and your home:
- Keep refrigerators and freezers closed as much as possible
- Use generators ONLY outdoors and away from windows and doors
- Never use a gas stove or oven to heat your home — it increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, fires and burns
- Make sure carbon monoxide detectors are installed and working on every level of your home
- Unplug appliances and electronics to prevent damage from power surges
- Have backup plans for refrigerating medications or using power-dependent medical devices
- Have at least 3 days of food and water on hand (for your pets too)
- Charge devices ahead of time and plan for batteries, flashlights and portable power banks
- Limit candle use to reduce fire risk

In today’s fast-paced digital landscape, our students are surrounded by streams of information. From social media feeds and online news to AI-generated content, the ability to navigate this world safely and effectively is no longer just a technical skill; it is a fundamental life skill.
What is Media Literacy? Media literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, create, and act using all forms of communication. It encourages students to ask critical questions about the media they consume: Who created this? Why was it sent? What points of view are represented?
Why It Matters Now
As a school district, our goal is to partner with you to ensure our students are not just passive consumers of content, but thoughtful, informed digital citizens. Media literacy helps students:
-
Identify Misinformation: Distinguish between factual reporting, opinion pieces, and "fake news."
-
Recognize Bias: Understand how different perspectives and motives influence the way a story is told.
-
Promote Mental Well-being: Develop a healthy relationship with social media by recognizing how algorithms and curated content can affect self-esteem.
-
Practice Digital Responsibility: Learn the long-term impact of their own digital footprint and how to communicate respectfully online.
How You Can Help at Home
Conversations are the most powerful tool we have. Try asking your child about a video or post they recently saw:
- "Does this seem 100% true to you? Why or why not?"
- "What do you think the person who posted this wants you to feel?"
- "How can we double-check this information?"
We are committed to integrating these essential skills into our classrooms to prepare our students for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century. Thank you for your continued support in helping our children become critical thinkers and responsible leaders.
